After these
amazing months it is a pleasure to share her final project the “Modular city generated by density”.  It is a huge project, where the city functions are growing with the increasing density of the residential blocks.

 

“Modular city generated by density –

living in the city and being a designer makes most of us, architects highly sensitized for good quality spaces in the urban environment. We try to define what makes our environment good, enjoyable and comfortable. For the europeans the city of Copenhagen emphasises the „good city”, and I always enjoy reading of this city’s architect – Jan Gehl’s analysis of distance, rhythm, edges to unlock the parameters of the „good city”.

For the BSS title I used the parameters of density according to Gehl’s data from Liveable cities to create an exponentially growing city. In the project the 100 x 100 city blocks have various city functions (schools, workplaces, market hall,  etc) distributed randomly to a 5 x 5 block area. The city functions are growing with the increasing density of the residential blocks.

To give frame for this organic growing (structural frame and contain services – like the Archigram Group’s Plug-in city), the concept was to have a simple grid system that is able to host pre-fabricated timber building modules: one 5 x 5 x 5 m cube representing one person’s living space.

This huge project, the full geometry was generated by Grasshopper – the random distribution of the city blocks, the structural frame and the pre-fabricated modules – and was sent to Revit with the Rhino.Inside.Revit plugin. This shows how mighty this workflow can be: from an always evolving concept to the bespoke circular window family type – everything was created with this visual scripting tool.

These past 5 months were intense learning, but also having lots of fun – with really good background music 😀

BSS FINAL PROJECT – MONIKA

Happy and proud of our amazing and first Hungarian BSS ArchiCAD Grasshopper Building System Specialist Monika Lenczuk 1f1ed-1f1fa

 

 

We are happy and proud of our first Hungarian Woman Building System Specialist! After these intense months it is a pleasure to share her final project playing with nature, geometry, bees and her sensible and personal interior world.

Her idea was to play with the hexagon grid and different building types, based on different tools and scripts what she has learned during the Title.

Let’s enjoy and share her final project and her words :

HONEYCOMB CITY

I created an imaginary ‘Honeycomb City’, a low-density development on the border of an existing city, next to the suburbs and mixed-use territories. The hexagon grid is contrasting with the existing rectangular structures, but can be perfectly connected to them. The hexagon grid also symbolizes the connection between city and nature.

The ‘Honeycomb City’ is a housing area, but is also providing workplaces and different facilities to the residents and the inhabitants of the neighbouring areas, and a lot of green spaces and gardening areas which are partly in common use.

The building types are made in Grasshopper, with different variations of cores, atriums, balconies, passages, and differently set parameters. The position of the buildings is also set in Grasshopper, and with expanding the hexagon grid the city can easily grow.

After transforming the geometry from Rhino/Grasshopper to BIM elements I also added Param-O objects in ArchiCAD and environment in Twinmotion, to make the model complete for a video presentation.

Special thanks to Nora and Andres for their patience and motivation. As the instructors of the Title they put a lot of work in individual communication with the students and are always open to new ideas. I was new to Grasshopper and I found the course really challenging sometimes. Nevertheless, it was a great introduction to Grasshopper and various other tools and working methods!” – Monika

We are super happy and excited to share the amazing work and final project of Paco! It was an amazing journey with him full of challenges, discussions, a lot of work and peace and love.

Let’s enjoy and share his final project and his words :

Plyscraper Z250

It is conceived as the first of a family of skyscrapers, one in which the human being does not impose his judgment on what is created, the tower grows and adapts itself, leaving aside whims and desires. It is a tree, an entity that seeks its own optimal form.

Due to the technological advances of recent years and the need to renew the construction industry, which is responsible for 10% of the world’s CO2 production. The fourth industrial revolution demands the abolition of old established working methods and schemes. From this need for change, the PLYSCRAPER Z250 concept was born. 

Sustainability in the use of land. In 2050 it is expected that there will be a population of about 10 billion inhabitants on planet earth, 65% of which will live in cities. Due to population growth and land scarcity, it is necessary to density the consolidated urban tissue. Building in height is the only way for cities to survive.

Sustainability in the architectural process. Due to the self-generation and genetic optimization of the tower, its forms, façade, and materials adapt to the ecosystem in which it is located. The resulting form is the result of a process where the prevailing wind, solar radiation, and structural efficiency define the volumes.

Sustainability of the construction system. The use of CLT for the main structure, slabs, and inner partitions. The CO2 absorption of the wood together with passive and semi-passive systems of thermal regulation of the building, in addition its materials are designed to be dismantled and reused. Creating a super-efficient and energetically autonomous organism with a negative carbon footprint. 

Sustainability among Time. The modular conception of its interior provides flexibility in the change of use and thus increases its adaptability over the years and with it its useful life.  The Tower as a living being that adapts to its environment and changes over time. 

The world is ready for change, is the building industry ready for this new era?

 

The PAZ BSS Title is structured from very basic levels to the final level where only your imagination can stop you. 

As I said to Andrés and Nora, the movement of parametric and computational design together with the need to rethink our creative processes, is like a big wave in the sea. When you see it from afar it is unmistakable, it doesn’t stand out on the surface of the great body of water. As it gets closer it gets bigger and bigger, until it catches you on the shore looking stunned and you end up with sand up to your ears. The only way to save yourself is to jump in the water and swim towards the wave to ride it out.

Congratulations to our Rhino.Inside.Revit Building System Specialist Chris Thompson. His hard work and willingness to break the limits of Revit with more organic free-form leaded to this amazing final project!

 

“Evolutionary Dome Labs

I have been working in mass timber construction industry for the last 10 years so It was a natural decision to choose a timber type of structural system as the basis for the final project. I also wanted to lean away from a rectangle or square approach, so I did some research and really liked how I felt when examining more organic free form timber structures, such as the Centre Pompidou Metz or the Swatch HQ in Biel. So that was it, I decided to go down the path of having ‘bubble’ dome timber grid type systems.

I wanted to create merging bubble complexes with beautiful timber ribs wrapping around a dome circumference creating bright, green and spacious feeling areas. My initial grand vision was for the bubbles to be form finding in themselves using certain evolutionary techniques, such as best optimal light by exploring multiple shapes and positions. The structure would consist of timber circular ribs and timber floor plates, both horizontal and vertical systems where to be fully parametric, customizable and adaptable to the dome shapes.

The workflow consisted of working in Rhino/Grasshopper pushing the data back and forth into Revit for BIM capabilities and create a final presentation video in Twinmotion.

There has been so much that I have learnt in the last 5 months, this video only captures a glimpse. It is the change in the way I think that I am finding most valuable.  The way to approach a challenge, deconstructing and re organising it, questioning when and how certain operations should be carried out, trying to really understand what is happing in a more global way. Of course having the door blasted open at al the amazing possibilities in invaluable, I’m starting feel like how a younger version of myself felt upon discovering something new for the first time!

RHINO INSIDE REVIT

Part 1 : Volumestudy with Area Calculation

The first part of our tool is to help with the calculation and design at the same time. We know that most architects spend 50% of their time in the first phase to calculate and control their design with numbers.

The first video is made in Revit with the powerful tool of Rhino Inside Revit.

This tool helps to process the information (from client, government, etc) as an external file (txt, excel, etc) with the desired functions, areas and square meters. After the division of the areas and the required SQM in grasshopper we can create our hatches in Revit (we created hatches, because this is one of the simplest and most visual tools in Revit in 2D, but it can be lines, etc..).

So, depending on our form and shape size the SQM indicates the number of floors. (we can also limit the height, depending on the regulation). We connect this information with Generic Model in Revit in real time and we have our first volume studies in LOD100. For visualisation we used different colours for different areas.

If the regulation or the wish of our client is changing, or we are not satisfied with our building shapes, Rhino Inside Revit is allowing us to have the changes in real time and maximize the potential of our design and export all square meters, cubic meters directly to excel directly to share with our client : )

We are really happy and proud of the work of our first BSS Rhino Inside Revit Building System Specialist Javier 🎓

 

He created an amazing exterior and interior world, connections and a system reaching high sensibility, free forms, opening big barriers in his every day BIM Software.

We are super happy to share with you his project, his ideas and experience during these months:

Geodomeland is a thought of everything learned during this title, starting by creating a variable and adaptive implementation system in any landscape’s topography. The main spaces are geodesic structures domes that change according to their levels of implementation, where new and different worlds emerge.

This title has served me to be able to open my imagination during design phases creating new forms, possibilities, adaptive systems based on multiple parameters in Revit!

Practically, it has been like having you right here helping me every time, and that is not easy to get for an online course. I had the feeling of having you very close.

I would like to tell you that the course has been absolutely top!! I didn’t used to use rhino and grasshopper in the career or in my professional life, but now I am sure, thanks to you, that I will use in my day to day.” – Javi

“The adaptable housing

The main idea was to design a building script that can transform and adapt to the surroundings, being the terrain, the views, regulations, the wind, the sun, etc. This of course is strongly affected by the place I live in Norway, surrounded by mountains, lakes, the sea: Nature.

While no project works everywhere in the world, the main ideas behind the script construction apply for near every architectural project in the world.

These 4 months have been really exhausting and amazing at the same time. I have learned a lot of different things, from very basic components to very powerful ones. The lessons where shown in a very understandable and didactical way and you were always available to questions. While the details were not that clear a the beginning of the course, the lessons and challenges were showing more and more difficulty, and the responses where not just given, always challenging us.

It feels good to have finished, but also a little bit empty now I may say. I’m eager to continue learning and designing this way. Thanks guys!” – Erick

“This Project was inspired by the phrase “A building like a tree a city like a forest” from the concept of Cradle to Cradle by William McDonough & Michael Braungart. It acknowledges the creativity and freedom of the parametric world, however without neglect to achieve a balance with nature. Part of the realization of this project included reading research papers to determine the size of the hexagons, height of buildings and their relationship with concepts such as buoyancy.

The island-city enabled me to test many of the techniques learnt throughout the course and to challenge myself to go even further.

I loved the experience! It meant hard work and few sleepless nights during 4 months, but it all has been worth the while. I am truly thankful for the support and feedback from PAZ.

Last but not least. Learning to code is great, but it´s even better to learn how to communicate your ideas. During the course PAZ places great emphasis on documenting your code (definitions) so that others can make use of the solutions in a very professional and straightforward way.

Graduating is great, but it is only the beginning of so much more to discover.” – Marco

In our Building System Specialist Talk – BSS Talk – PAZ Academy invited Nathan Luke from Geometry Gym to learn about Parametric BIM Models.

We are very happy and excited to welcome Nathan Luke, Structural engineering consultant, software and tool developer from Geometry Gym.

Nathan joined GeometryGym in late 2018 after 8 years as a structural engineering consultant. Nathan is apart of the software development, training, support and sales teams and predominately focuses on tools development and supporting engineering clients. So he has a lot to explain and show us!

So let’s listen him and enjoy this hour with his great and dedicated work!

A bit about Geometry Gym : Founded in 2009, Geometry Gym started predominately around the idea of generating structural analysis models from complex architectural forms, generally between Rhino3d/Grasshopper and Oaysis GSA. As a transfer mechanism Jon learnt about the world of IFC and OpenBIM as a way of transferring this information between a whole range of software applications. So they do an amazing and incredible job!
