“Before I talk about my project or my experience I want to thank both of you for the guidance, support and love without which I can’t make it through.

The concept behind my project “island twisting tower” was a tower that emerges from the ground and twists as it grows up just like a plant grow upwards and twists as it goes up. The twisting tower is the main feature to focus on is a module of floors that repeats and twists  continuously at an angle. This concept is mirrored to form a twin twisting tower.  inspired by Singapore’s vision of green space, I have tried to include greenery in the sky through high-rise terraces and gardens. And this is “the party zone where magic happens”. This space allows the people to enjoy and relax.

“The orange mushroom” aka-viewing deck, allows people to gather and take a boat ride serves as a meeting point. It also gives an ant’s eye view perspective of the twin twisting tower and one can feel the scale of the building..landscaped pockets to provide space for play-area and spaces to enjoy view of the city  and sea.

And now let’s talk about the process….well, it was quite delightful to see how fast I was able to convert my concept design into a BIM model. I can imagine how many hours and how much manpower we usually take in a normal scenario . At the beginning of the Title  I thought it gonna be very hard for a non-scripting background but doing the final project has changed that mindset.” – Simmi

THE SOLAR CLOCK OF SWISS HISTORY

The idea for this historical solar clock was in my head since the diploma at the end of my studies. I mothballed that then and focused on my professional job (as an architect). But when Nora and Andres asked me about my idea for the project, I proposed that among two other topics. They were so enthusiastic towards the solar clock, that I think we all knew from the start where it will go 🙂

Nora and Andres supported me the all the way in the project, both technically and in creative terms. It is really important to mention that that was not only about the Grasshopper script, but also about managing public data, visualization struggles, all the stuff around that you need to develop from A to Z.

The script I’ve built is generating a net consisting horizontally of days and vertically of hours. They are generated by calculating how shadow cast by the Sun is wandering through the year. In that generation only the very end of the shadow is taken into account. Thanks to that, the clock can point not only an hour at the particular moment, but also the month and the day of the month. The script is now ready to generate the net at every location in the world. Now, once we have the net, the design has a very good potential for historic places. Since you can point the hour, day and the month, why don’t place at this spot an adequate historical painting, logo or poster? Possibilities are limitless and they can be tailored according to every scale – of a city, country or continent.

And about the Title itself :

I started at PAZ Academy already with some ground knowledge of Dynamo in Revit. Nora and Andres guide how to develop that logic in your brain to have clean structure, and it is extremely important. “Welcome to a place that can reflects you!! This is a place to enjoy the landscape, the nature, the environment, but where you can feel all that doubled. It has a double meaning, the city that reflects the surroundings but also the city to reflect about your own self.
You can get lost in the pillars of each tetrahedron, in the future will be more filled with nature, that will transform it into a kind of little forest, but then after that you can enjoy the sun or the rain, see the dawn or the dusk, or go up to a tetrahedron building and enjoy all the phases.

In the idea of generating this city from tetrahedrons was to think about how precious our lives are. Our live it is a treasure we must care for, and not only our lives as humans beings, but all creatures lives!

What I really liked during the process was that the script wasn´t static, it could change, and I COULD MAKE IT CHANGE, I really felt that I had a new tool, that I could speak another language, and I enjoyed a lot of this alive process, and it´s so exiting.” – Marta

VOXELAND ist nicht sofort aus einer genialen Idee entstanden. Vielmehr aus einem Prozess des Dialogs mit PAZ, dem Suchen nach einem verbindenden Element, einer gewissen Poetik und menschlichen Touch im Projekt. Für das BSS Abschlussprojekt sollte Kreativität und Poetik aber ein zentraler Faktor sein.

Ich wollte eine Phantasiewelt erschaffen, die an jedem x-beliebigen Ort sein kann. Die Grundidee hinter VOXELAND ist – von der Linie zum Quadrat zum Würfel und endet im dreidimensionalen Gitter als Voxel plus etwas Phantasie. Bei der Ausprägung der Würfel und der Gebäude inmitten der Landschaft, entstehen diverse Lebensräume mit unterschiedlichen Qualitäten – aussen & innen, hoch & niedrig, Natur & Urbanität. Die Menschen dort fangen an die Räume mit Leben zu füllen. Sie wohnen, arbeiten, feiern, haben Spass, treiben Sport oder machen Ausflüge. Eine Phantasiewelt eben – VOXELAND.

Der BSS Titel beginnt mit einfachen Grundlagen sowohl in Rhino als auch in Grasshopper, vertieft in gut strukturierten Schritten den Umgang mit den Tools Rhino – Grasshopper – ArchiCAD und betrachtet darüberhinaus auch architektonische Grundlagen. Am Ende wird man sogar zum Regisseur und Film-Creator. Die Ausbildung zum Building System Specialist setzt eben nicht nur auf das reine Wissen und eine abstrakte Anwendung rund um die Parametric. Sondern man spürt von Woche zu Woche mehr, dass es Nora und Andrés sehr wichtig ist den Blick zu öffnen und vor allem die Kontrolle als Architekt über den Entwurf nie zu verlieren. Grasshopper, Rhino und auch alle andern Tools sind lediglich Hilfsmittel die uns helfen sollen, unsere Idee besser umzusetzen. Genau das habe ich auch bei meinem finalen Projekt festgestellt und umgesetzt.” – Christian

EXTRUDING EARTH

As a final project for the BSS-Title, I set up the project called Extruding earth. The project revolves around the integration of an urban design concept within the natural lines of a hilly landscape. Now-a-days population numbers and the need for housing keeps on growing, resulting in narrowing and disrupting the nature reserves. Instead of Rising buildings from the ground up, I created an urban concept beneath the ground, keeping the landscape intact.

The inspiration for the concept was the image of fissures and cracks in dried earth. This creates a pattern of detached areas inside the landscape. Instead of resurrecting an urban concept from the ground up, my idea was the extrude the pattern into the earth to create the building volumes (like the detached dirt areas). Doing so, the natural flow of the landscape continues into the roofs of the buildings, thus creating a lower impact on the scenery and creating a more integrated system between the urban development and the surrounding area.

Within the concept I set up a parametric system to generate the urban plan within a hilly landscape and pattern. Both are fully editable so the placement on the landscape and the desired grid are customable to desire. For the project I chose a pattern equal to the dried up earth. The building system than creates the plot areas by offsetting the pattern to create the road structure and building plots. The system analyses the plot area to define the different typologies and creating the building perimeters. These perimeters are used to generate the first big step into the system: extruding the earth inward to create the building volumes and pathways!

The second part of the building system is generating the different building typologies out of the generated building volumes. The system analysed the measurements of the building plots to determine the building typologies. On the smaller plot sizes a closed building system is applied. For the larger plot sizes a building system with a inner gallery and courtyard garden is applied. A third system is applied to create the park strip between the buildings. All building systems inherit the form of the landscape into its roof structure. So from the top, the plan always follows the sloping lines of the hilly landscape to remain integrated into the natural landscape, creating an integrated urban system that’s part of the scenery. Then the different building designs are implemented by the building system generating the urban design as shown in the video.

The whole system reacts to different pattern and to different landscapes and could be expended by adding more building typologies to the system. But the system could also be adapted to react on a different context or high density environment.  

The foundation of the project is the knowledge I gained during the PAZ BSS Title. Nora and Andrés have shaped the course in a very playful and challenging way by drafting the PAZ Games. Although it is an intensive process, during the 4 months your knowledge of parametric design grows exponential. During the course they continuously challenge you to increase your parametric thinking and by using their platform they share their knowledge and skills under personal guidance! It’s been an amazing journey and I’m looking forward to implementing this knowledge in my working life. I’m very happy to be part of the PAZ community to keep on learning about parametric design and proud to have earned the BSS Title!” – Kay

LUCERNE CLIMBING TOWER

The main idea of my project was to use as many workflows as possible, which are realistic to apply on an ordinary project in Switzerland. What can we achieve by using software like Grasshopper, when planning detached houses or apartment buildings? Finally, it’s less about software and more about processes, systems and methods. My aim has been creating methods for everyone and every project without being fixed on one software.

For this aim I chose a place in Lucerne and replaced an existing building by a new one, so I had the challenge to integrate my building into an existing situation. My vision was to build a bridge between the higher buildings and the apartment buildings around. There is one famous view on many postcards of Lucerne: the view with the Chapel bridge in front and Mount Pilatus in the back. When we want to put a building in this scenery, it has to be done very carefully.

In my design process I started with one big block, which I extruded with the boundary of the existing building. After that I did some volume studies, I played with the golden ratio and reduced the block into three smaller blocks. In a next step I visualized the different use with different colours. After serious studies and discussions with Nóra and Andrés, I made some holes into my three blocks and as a result I scripted some new balconies. When discussing a new idea was born: the idea of a climbing tower. On every terrace there is a unique view over Lucerne which we should share with everyone.

It was an extraordinary time with you Nóra and Andrés and I learned more than Grasshopper from you. Before I started the BSS-title I had ideas, now I have a system and methods to implement these ideas. Thank you, Nóra and Andrés, for exemplifying this mindset with your empathy, power and motivation. There is only one person needed to trigger off an avalanche of change.” – Manuel

“The project seeks to implement the workflows and tools learnt in the BSS onto a mid-scale, medium density mixed use urban project. Hence the term ‘hypermix’. It reflects the type of projects I often work on in practice, so I felt it apt to reflect this in the project.

The desire to create more sustainable neighbourhoods necessitates the successful integration of different uses – living, working, leisure, industry, retail, transport and nature. The arrangement of which can hopefully result in resilient, flexible and walkable places. I am particularly interested in organisation and typology, particularly in collective housing. There is often a pressure to increase density in schemes, and the challenge then becomes bringing really nice qualities to both dwellings and collective spaces in the city.  As such, the project looks to create several of these ‘ingredients’ and start to drive them using some simple design intentions and variables as a stepping stone into ‘real world’ projects. I have outlined some of these below.

It is always important to me to explore spaces from a human scale and perspective, to project the activities onto them to test scale, orientation, materials and so on. My video tries to focus in on the different spaces created to get a sense of how each differs and see the potential and best qualities of each.

The project is not radical in the typologies it creates but rather reflects a first step into how these fundamental parts can be developed using rhino/grasshopper/rhino.inside/revit to improve workflow and design iteration on a daily basis.  Most certainly this project is far from perfect or finished it it’s resolution, but useful in putting the tools learnt into practice, and seeing the potential of twinmotion as a tool to assess and communicate ideas!  In the definitions I wanted to leave the space for users to be able to create ‘custom’ layouts easily  –  for example rather than generating things from a grid, the user could draw some simple curves for an apartment building contour and layout that would then generate the various building elements.  The user could then play with different variables like balcony size, depth, window ratio, materials in a very intuitive way.  I like the balance between being able to create and ‘break’ rules of a system to respond to the context or other design objectives. 

I had known about rhino.inside for a little while before starting the title, but never really got time to try it out.  Having been a die hard rhino user for more than a decade now, I was in no doubt this would be super useful and awesome. I probably enjoyed the data part the most because it was just really applicable to the work I do, and I really improved my understanding of lists, workflow and organisation. Before starting I obviously didn’t know anything about the various revit components available in grasshopper, but now I feel like I have a really good grasp of the fundamentals and I know what the possibilities are for future use.

It is quite a unique title I think in the way it’s set up. It succeeds in really engaging you in all the details which is important for learning. Having to replicate the image for each challenge means you really must pay attention to all the elements and variables etc. Very clever!” – Alina

BSS FINAL PROJECT – SWISS-LANDIA

It was a pleasure to see her hard work, engagement and fast development and of course her final project. Her profession is not an architect, but how she was combining data, design to create this amazing idea and milieu was a pleasure for the PAZ Team. Here you can find her description and words :

“SWISS-LANDIA

My project “Swiss Landia” was inspired by my new home country Switzerland and its cantons. My core idea was to visualize Swiss key figures in a building. For that purpose I chose the four cantons Bern, Zürich, Graubünden and Tessin. I used the key figures area, population, number of neighbour cantons as input parameters for each building to steer the size of the floor plan, the number of floors and the floor plan itself.

Based on the peculiarity of each canton I created an individual and characteristic look for each building. The results are my four buildings “The Circus” (Bern), “Modern Terrazia” (Tessin), “Naturia” (Graubünden) and “Wild Zürich”. Everything was realized with computational engineering in Grasshopper and transferred into Revit.

To complete the project, I created an island in the shape of Switzerland with its rivers and lakes. To realize this idea in a realistic way I took open-source GIS Data from Switzerland, rescaled it, simplified and generated solids in Grasshopper. More context was added in the software TwinMotion. The final visualization is a summary of all the work, energy and creative ideas that have been invested into this project. 

The experience as a BIM Modeler in a railway construction company showed me that I have to learn more skill sets like computational engineering to get on with BIM. That was the beginning of an extremely unexpected journey. I learned fast that you need to work hard and be really disciplined to get forward and that can sometimes be quite a challenge especially when you work full-time. All the small steps you do in the title with the motivating support of amazing teachers will make you gain confidence. You are more and more able to implement your ideas and let your own deep thinking and understanding of the parametric design grow.

After a while I reached the point when I realized that the hard work paid off. I started to enjoy and it felt more and more natural. It was an incredible feeling to see the progress I made in my own project. I must honestly admit that my project idea was a special challenge because I wasn’t used to think in an architectural way and I didn’t think enough about the design. I had to explore my creativity in a new way and open myself for new perspectives and thinking. Especially in these difficult times Nora and Andrés pushed me with a lot of enthusiasm, passion and positive energy. They believed in me and gave me the chance to surpass myself. I created a project I would have never expected and I am really proud of.

The title was an incredible journey and made me discover new aspects of myself. It was a big enrichment and a great experience that will last and influence not only my future work but also my personal development. With the Building System Specialist Title, I am really happy to say that I have now a piece of architecture in my professional career.

BSS FINAL PROJECT – RE-MIXER

RE-MIXER

After these
amazing months it is a pleasure to share her final project the “RE-MIXER”. It is a really sensible project, where the theory was made in practice ; )

“RE-MIXER –

Taking as reference the 1960s science fiction themes, like «The Thousand Dreams of Stellavista» tale of JG Ballard, published in 1962, Re-mixer is an attempt to look at architecture from another perspective avoiding formal classifications. So, with the texts of Ballard, Alexander, Price, Banham and the work of John Frazer in mind, I propose a game whose first step involving the dis-mounting and re-mounting of an existing building, in this first case in a random way.

Through the use of visual programming, which I have learn to control in the PAZ BSS Title, it is possible first to extract all the information about relevant pieces, in this case the concrete elements, and show them like in a Lego box mounting instructions. All relevant information is extracted, from material, size, structural capabilities, etc.

The next step would imply re-mounting or re-building if you prefer. In the video I show only internal variations, but this changes could affect the shape and volume of the building, depending on the use intended. Just imagine the potential to analyse existing buildings in order to select materials to re-use. Once it was a common practice in past. People were reusing older buildings stones and bricks from Temples or fortresses to build their own homes. There would be no Haghia Sophia, or no Mosque of Cordoba without reusing material from past buildings.

Nevertheless, the idea here is to let the imagination freedom and ask ourself what if buildings could move?

Thanks to the title of PAZ, Andrés and Nora have given me tools to not only visualise what I had in mind, which by the way I would like to thank them, since the point of the title is not only to master the graphic programming tools, but to represent it professionally too, and arrive to professional quality standards. They gave me the tools to start mounting my own vision of architecture. A set hat mixes precision and freedom, where dreaming is not only encourage, but it is a must part of the process.

So, if you have some critical thoughts, feel indifferent towards what is happening in the architectural context, and ideas that you don`t know how to implement…I recommend you the BSS Title of PAZ. – Mikel
